Have you even been to Toontown in Disney? I'm in love with the furniture and styling of the Disney character's homes - these super exaggerated and colorful versions of real homes. I love how they take a very traditional looking home and furniture design and make it into this cartoon-y feel in real life. I wanted to bring some of that into my new home, and the IKEA Karlstad couch provided me with the perfect way of doing it. Most of the leg replacements for the Karlstad remain super modern and thin, usually utilizing a very 1960s style of leg with metal feet or bent steel hairpin legs. Don't get me wrong I like that, but I wanted to really mess with the look of the Karlstad. I decided that thick, bulbous bun feet painted in a bright shade would be the perfect pop. This is a super easy DIY, and could work for many things, like chair legs or table legs.
What You'll Need
A piece of modern furniture (table, couch)
Bulbous, thick legs (think Louis the 14th style furniture with thick or ornate legs)
Sample size of home paint in your favorite shade (ours is Pantone Peacock Blue from Lowe's)
Paint Brush
Stir Stick
Cardboard box flattened or similar work space.
First, check how many legs you will need. We purchased a Karlstad 2+3 corner sofa which has 8 legs. You can look up instruction manuals on IKEA's or your manufactuer's website if the furniture isn't in your home yet. Look at local hardware stores for legs. We found ours at Lowe's.
You will need 2-3 coats depending on your color for the legs. With a paintbrush, carefully paint the legs. I did not fully paint the legs since the bottoms are going on the floor and really, there isn't much point. Allow to dry for at least 2 days. I allowed mine to dry for a week beforehand.
Screw the legs into the leg holes! Voila! Done!
Some tips for finding legs:
-Measure the area from the hole for the screw to the edge of the furniture. You want to make sure your legs are not too thick and won't spill over the edge.
-Think about proportions, and play with it! A thin leg will give a modern, sleek appearance. A thick leg heavy and playful.
-Color will matter. If you choose very vintage colors or do golf leaf, you can miss the mark.
This is awesome! I love the pop of color to your living room in a really subtle way.
