This Girl is On Fire

I have started to craft a list of things to do in Pennsylvania - either from suggestions from friends or the internet. First on our list was what used to be Centralia, a town up until the 1980s when the entire town was evacuated due to an underground mine fire. To this day, a fire burns beneath the area where I am standing, although on this rather windy day, none of the smoke was visible when photographed. Parts of the Pennsylvania Route 61 were rendered unusable and caved in from the fires, resulting in a small stretch of abandoned highway that is left with a giant crevice in the middle. In the end, I think the story itself was much more interesting that the place. I climbed some dirt piles while tons of local high school / college kids did the same around me. The roadway is now covered in vulgar spray paint, beer cans, trash (like a baby stroller, TV, weird things), and a strangely concerning amount of shotgun shells. On my way out, 5 guys on ATVs and those weird off road golf carts came barreling down the walkable side of the road, forcing us and another few groups to scatter abruptly to the side. That's about the time these heels became less sensible. Also, yes, I do this kind of thing in heels - but I put those awesome gel things inside them!

Abandoned Mine Fire

We kept venturing out to Allentown to visit Fegley's Brew Works. I'm beginning to realize that I have visited more places in Pennsylvania, especially since I used to go on trips to Pittsburgh in high school, than a lot of natives.

There are many reasons I chose to wear this dress that eShakti provided me on this adventure. Upon ordering the dress through their site, I started dreaming up scenarios to wear it on. Sure, this would make a really great bridesmaid dress or could be wearable to dance, but it's so incredibly versatile and comfortable. When I heard of Centralia, I thought the red would be a fun 'firey' color to take along for the trip. The dress came quickly, the week before I planned to wear it! Strapless dresses are difficult for most, they need to be the correct size in the chest and waist to stay up but not squish you in all the wrong ways. Since I used custom measurements, this dress fits me better than any other strapless dress I've ever owned. Plus, the length is quite perfect. No tailoring needed here - I really suggest getting a strapless dress (or all of your strapless dresses because I honestly do not know how another is going to fit so well) from eShakti. Plus, this dress has pockets. Pockets! The buttons are actually fake and sewn onto the dress, which I was quite thankful for as it means I get the cute button look with no unfortunate gaping across my chest. This style comes with a matching sash as well, but I prefer the dress on it's own or with a contrasting belt.

  5. That is CRAZY!!! I've never heard of that place, but it sure sounds like a fun adventure to stumble upon! I love this dress on you--it is super cute! I really wish I had the pretty curves that you do. I can't wear a strapless dress to save my life. I also love the polka dot cardigan. It looks great against the red!

  12. You look fantastic! Also, never thought about it, but it makes perfect sense to get strapeless from a place that tailors to your specifications. Smart thought!

  13. Such a cool story behind this place! I love abandoned things. I think they're so interesting...and a little spooky too, which is always fun. And strapless dresses definitely are hard to get to fit right. Especially when strapless bras don't ever seem to really do what they're supposed to do. I always end up wearing a normal bra and just sticking the straps down into the dress. I keep hearing about eShakti and I'm going to have to try them out sometime.

  15. The town sounds kinda of creepy. That's just not something you see in real life, usually only in movies. It made for a great outfit post. I love that you wear dresses and heels all the time. I hope to wear a dress one day while riding my bike for an outfit post. ;) Probably not heels though. hahaha I really love the dress I just got from eShakti a few weeks back. Red is your color!!

  16. Aaaand now I wanna watch Silent Hill. No, but seriously, that town's story is amazing, I'd love to visit! Annoying teenagers and all!

  19. Oooh, that's such a neat story behind the town. Kind of creepy, kind of cool. I like things like that. And I like even more that you go out of your way to visit such places. Your adventures are so rad, Katherine!

That dress really is lovely--I agree with you that it can be casual and dressed up a little more, maybe because it's strapless? The buttons are such a cute detail, and I'm glad that you really adore it! Pockets are ALWAYS a plus. I remember discovering that my eShakti dress had pockets and it pretty much made my day. All dresses need pockets, don't they?!

  24. Wow Katherine, you look gorgeous! I love this dress on you! And Centralia, I am so glad you went there and took pictures, I've been wanting to go forever! A friend of the family actually grew up there and remembers it before the fires and everything, so sad what happenned. I heard there were a few holdouts up till recently, but not sure if they are there anymore. What a cool adventure!

  27. I've heard of the town but I try to avoid places that are on fire. Might melt my make-up yo! Hahaha! I totally agree that most outsiders visit more places in the area than the locals. Just like when we went on vacation last month we asked a guy at the car rental place what we should see in Denver (which is at the airport a very short distance from the city) and he's like "Oh man, I haven't been to the city in years!". Like really? My sister in law went to Yellowstone last summer and they stopped at a grocery store 5 miles from the enterance of the park and they were asking the locals what is their favorite part of the park. Most of the locals had NEVER been to Yellowstone! I guess we take the stuff around for granted!

  28. This dress looks awesome on you! I definitely will be looking into eshakti if I need a strapless dress. I always have a hard time getting ones that fit in the bust and waist at the same time. This red dress is so cute with the button detailing. The dotted cardigan looks perfect with it.
