one. find 'the' bag.
For traveling, I use one of three bags. I do have a camera backpack, but what use is that when I need to have my iPad & other things in there too. Here are the bags I use.
ultralite backpack -- i designed this product
two. neoprene camera case
I strongly suggest investing a few dollars into a neoprene case like this one for your camera. I always carry my camera with the 50mm attached and my Tokina 16-28mm unattached because the thing is giant with the Tokina attached to it.
Now, I will say, a camera backpack is more protective. They are also huge pain. I like mine for padding (my husband will hate me for this post, by the way, because he is still appalled by me not putting my camera in my camera backpack.) But...every time I want something he has to take it off and access it from the back. It's an ordeal. And once a kid climbed on our backpack at Disney. Not okay, parents of that kid, my thousand dollar camera isn't a thing for your kid to climb on while I'm eating dinner. For traveling, I need a bag I can put my iPad, wallet, sunnies, snacks, and other things in. Here's my bag unpacked for traveling.
four. the tripod!
Oh yeah! You want to bring a tripod, don't you? About that... it's not going to fit in your backpack/messenger/purse, sorry. So jam it in your carry on! Here's what mine looks like diagonally in it's suitcase. (I swear it does close. Also. Here's what is coming with me to Florida on Friday!)
Also, on trips like this, I bring a purse large enough to hold my camera and lens. These are my four purses I swear by because not only are they awesome and stylish, they can act as a camera bag.
doctor q grovee bag by marc by marc jacobs // hobo faux sure bag from modcloth
I can really highly suggest the two valhalla brooklyn bags. The Marc Jacobs one works, but it's a endless bucket of a purse and isn't as easy to carry as the Valhalla Brooklyn bags. Her bags are all handmade from lovely leathers with a Japanese cotton interior. Both of mine have a wave print I seem to fall for easily. These bags can go though anything. I take mine everywhere.
Wow!! I'm amazed..You can pack well. Very compact and yet you still manage to fit in everything! I totally agree with you on bringing the 50mm lens. I love it ever since I bought it! Takes really nice close up pictures =D

omg when I fly I am such a mess, I always bring way too much and never what I really need. I end up buying not only clothes but the normal necessity and like you I fly a lot so it is always issues for me. I must learn! xx
ReplyDeleteI've never flown and NOT checked a bag so I'm pretty impressed! I don't think I could do it though, my shoes alone take up so much room :)

I loved this post, I'll surely check it out again next time I'll fly!

You are a packing master! There is NO WAY I would be able to pull this off. I am one of those 6 suitcase because I can't stand the thought that I left something behind that I might need kind of girls.
ReplyDeleteI cannot sacrifice shoe space when packing for my tripod. I've tried and I can't do it. I envy that you can make it work.

You are a way more efficient packer than I am. I'm awful, I pack way too many things and then get flustered that I ran out of space. :)

Love this post, you are an amazing packer, can you come pack for me when I go on trips please!? I am horrible at it, and I never plan, and tend to forget things when I do it last minute. I will be looking to this post for guidance the next time I go on a trip! Oh, and I am so in love with your purses!
ReplyDeleteI hate packing, I want to bring so much and there not enough room for that haha. Also, I definitely need a good case for my camera so I can take him safely with me in my bags :)
ReplyDeleteI use a Marc Jacobs bag for my flights too. It's a bit heavy being leather and all but it fits SO much stuff in...to the point where sometimes I can't find things inside it!
ReplyDeleteThat first photo is so cute! I strangely never carry bags. I always find a way to tuck it somewhere. Haha, my boyfriend's pockets are usually the first victims :P
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I have to say, I'm a horrible packer! I always take way too much and have to check bags... Even for a short trip. I also use my purse as a camera bag, it's nice to know I'm not the only one :)

Thank you for posting that camera bag! I've been looking for an affordable one and this is perfect. I don't really like carrying around a camera bag, so this is perfect if I want to stick my camera in a large purse without damaging it.
ReplyDeleteI'm lovin' this guide, Katherine. I could seriously benefit from this. I also could not believe that that huuuge tripod could fit in your suitcase among all the other stuff...I want proof! Haha.

I need that neoprene camera case! I've actually been in the market for one, and most of the ones I've seen are the bulky kind. And I also notice you like extra dessert delights...I work for them ;)
ReplyDeleteYou have supercute bags!
ReplyDeleteI love reading this kind of stuff because I hate packing and seem to have SO much stuff with me all the time! Glad I'm not the only one to finds it a huge ordeal to take off my backpack (or "dismount", as I call it) to find something! Also I'm amazed by how neat and purposeful the stuff in your purse is! I am always amazed when I empty mine out, like 20 toothpicks? What was I thinking?!

Lovely! You sure are a very well organized person!
ReplyDeleteHa! Totally feel you on camera bag woes! So much smarter but such a pain! I usually make Ryan carry it or obvs flung it off for pictures.
ReplyDeleteYou are my hero!! I really need to learn to pack lighter. Checking baggage is always such a pain.
ReplyDeleteYou're good in packing...
ReplyDeleteme? I fail in that department my hubby does the packing.
Flying without checking a bag?! You are the ultimate packer!

No bag check?! Wow, you are a pro! Flying scares me so much that I try to avoid it at all costs. Seriously, I am bookmarking this post for the next time I have to get a plane. The whole packing thing for the airport just straight up stresses me out! Have a safe trip Katherine! xo Marisa
ReplyDeleteNice bags!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post. I think I need to invest in a neoprene case as well. It's such a hassle sometimes to pack all your camera gear so I appreciate this post of showing us how you do your packing. :)

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog! Your blog is so cute (and i adore corgis too)!! You now have a new follower :)
ReplyDeleteHave fun in florida! You are much more organised than me with packing, I ALWAYS end up packing last minute, no matter how organised I try and be!
Wow, this is a great post! I actually haven't flown since middle school, but these are some great tips to keep in mind when I do (hopefully will be doing some traveling next year!) I never thought of what a pain traveling with a camera could be...nor did I ever think anyone would find a small child in their bag..
ReplyDeleteGreat tips for travel! This year I am going to need to figure out how to pack my DSLR and lenses, so these are great ideas. <3

I love how nearly everything that goes in your rucsac is cute! Miinie mouse, hello kitty, space invader. All you stuff is adorable! It must make you happy to travel with so many pretty things!
ReplyDeleteCant believe you take your tripod with you! I take my camera places, but although I own a tripod it is too heavy to take around with me. You have dedication to the cause.

Well packed!!! I admire the way you organised it.

I'm very impressed. I'm notoriously a big packer- love the camera neoprene case idea, that would make such a big difference to how I pack!
ReplyDeleteThank you! This is so great. You really are a pro!
ReplyDeletelooks you've got a great system for packing down! Def a camera bag/purse seems more practical for pulling the camera out. on our recent quick trips we've only been taking backpacks and it sure gets annoying having to take it off for every thing. Your hubs sounds like mine w/ taking obsessive, I mean excellent, care of things : )
ReplyDelete& thank you for your super sweet comments btw, how did you find my blog? Glad you did, yours is so lovely!

First of all: I loved this post!
ReplyDeleteSecond: you pack wonderfully!
I wish I was as neat as you are. I always bring way too much stuff with me... And I'm afraid here we can only take one bag with us without bag check... And even a small purse counts. It sucks.
That neoprene case looks like a must.
