We are getting closer to the time for holiday parties - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's, etc. - lots and lots of things! I always make Chex Mix as a yummy treat because it's easy and everyone likes it. Our recipe is ever so slightly different than the on the box and is always adjustable - I use less salt for Jason because he doesn't like it. Best part - it's microwavable - which means it takes no time, can be done in a hurry, and basically anywhere, including dorms. This is super easy and maybe doesn't need detailed instructions, but I give them anyway, complete with animated GIF. Anyone notice my animated GIF obsession lately?
What You'll Need
Unsalted Butter
Seasoned Salt
Worcestershire Sauce
Corn Chex
Rice Chex
Whole Wheat Chex
Pretzels (I used wheels)
A Big, Microwavable Bowl
A Wooden Spoon
A Microwave
Mix your dry ingredients together like this :: 2.5 cups corn Chex, 2.5 cups Rice Chex, 2 Cups Whole Wheat Chex, and 2 Cups Pretzel Twists - Basically any mix of 9 cups you want. Be sure to layer the mix. I add in 1 cup at a time, alternating cereals and pretzels.
In a Pyrex glass, cut 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Melt in the microwave for around 1 minute or until melted. You can also use margarine - but I am a huge advocate of butter for this recipe.
Add in 8 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, 3 teaspoons of seasoned salt, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and a small sprinkling of black pepper. Stir well.
Pour half the mixture over the cereal and leave half. Stir well.
Then pour the other half over and stir again. I use a wooden spoon in case I accidentally forget about it and leave it in when I put in the microwave. When I was a kid, my mom and I did that with a plastic spoon and the spoon was forever melted. We totally still have the spoon though.
Microwave in intervals of 1 minute and 45 seconds, taking the bowl carefully out of the microwave and stirring vigorously in between. This is important. You do not want salty, possibly burnt, clumps of chex mix at the bottom. Trust me.
Allow to cool and serve in cute serving dishes with beer! Voila! Easiest thing ever.
Yum! That looks delicious! I love your little serving platter!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! I've always wondered what the "secret" was to Chex Mix... and it looks like I already have all the ingredients to whip up my own batch. ;) Thanks for sharing!

MMMMmmmm looks too good. I will not be making this. It would be too risky to have it in the house. I'm sure I'd be tempted to eat the whole bowl.
